Aboriginal education

Kincumber High School is committed to providing culturally responsive, inclusive and high-expectations education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. We recognise the importance of strong identity, connection to culture and community, and academic success as foundational to student wellbeing and achievement.

Our Aboriginal Education programs are guided by respectful partnerships with local Aboriginal communities and the Darkinjung people, and are embedded as a whole-school responsibility rather than a standalone initiative. Aboriginal Education is a strategic focus at KHS, with cross-faculty representation ensuring cultural perspectives, Aboriginal knowledges and high-impact teaching practices are embedded across learning areas.

A strong sense of belonging is fostered through the Junior AECG, which empowers student voice, leadership and cultural pride. Students actively contribute to decision-making, cultural events and school initiatives, developing confidence, advocacy skills and connection to community. Whole-school events such as NAIDOC Week, Yarn Ups and yidaki and weaving programs celebrate culture, achievement and excellence, while strengthening relationships between students, staff and community members.

KHS maintains a strong focus on academic growth and aspiration for Aboriginal students. Targeted mentoring, high expectations and personalised support are complemented by explicit teaching practices that support literacy, numeracy and curriculum access across all stages. Aboriginal students are encouraged and supported to engage in leadership opportunities, enrichment programs and pathways that reflect their strengths, interests and future goals.

Our partnerships with the AECG, Aboriginal Education Officer, families and community organisations ensure programs are authentic, responsive and grounded in local context. Through these partnerships, Kincumber High School continues to build a learning environment where Aboriginal students are known, valued and supported to thrive academically, culturally and personally.
