Human Society and its Environment

In Human Society and its Environment (HSIE), both subjects of History and Geography are mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

Human Society and its Environment is the study of how humans interact with the world, how society operates and how it is changing. Through the study of HSIE, students develop the skills to prepare them to actively and responsibly participate as informed citizens in the contemporary world.

At Kincumber High School, the HSIE Faculty is passionate in teaching students about sustainable living practices, the legacies of our past, the rule of law, civics and citizenship and entrepreneurial skills.

Across Years 7-10 (Stages 4-5), students complete the mandatory courses of Geography and History. In Years 9-10, students will also have the opportunity to complete HSIE Electives. These studies include Commerce, Elective Geography, Elective History and International Studies.

Outside learning experiences have an important place across learning programs and at Kincumber High School we embrace our natural surrounds, with fieldwork days for Geography undertaken at localities including Avoca Lagoon, Bouddi National Park and Terrigal/Wamberal Beach.

In Years 11-12 (Stage 6), students have a wide variety of HSIE courses to select and they appeal to many students at Kincumber High School. These courses include:

- Aboriginal Studies

- Ancient History

- Business Studies

- Business Services (VET)

- Economics

- Geography

- Legal Studies

- Modern History

- Retail Services (VET)

- Society & Culture

HSIE staff have a vast amount of experience in NESA HSC marking, they are also passionate about their subject areas, lesson preparation and assessing student learning in a meaningful manner. Students also feel supported and guided through the many enrichment opportunities provided by the HSIE staff.

A wonderful opportunity offered by HSIE is the Tour of Europe. This trip is undertaken bi-annually and sees students travel to Europe in the month of April. They visit prominent ancient and modern historical sites such as Pompeii, Herculaneum, Rome, National Socialists sites in Germany, the World War One Battlefields in France and Belgium and prominent world cities including London and Paris.
