English

English study is mandatory in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12.

The study of English is central to the learning and development of all young people. It helps create confident communicators, imaginative thinkers and informed citizens. It is through the study of English that individuals learn to analyse, understand, communicate and build relationships with others and with the world around them. By studying English, students develop their language skills through activities involving speaking and listening, reading and writing, and viewing and representing. They learn about language and literature through working with a wide range of print, spoken, visual, media, multimedia and digital texts.

At Kincumber High School we are lucky enough to have enthusiastic and experienced teachers who share a love of literature from Shakespeare to Harry Potter. A strong focus on literacy and developing a love for literature is our passion and we are dedicated to passing this onto students from Year 7 to Year 12.

English is a mandatory course across all Stages, yet it is only in Year 11 and 12 that students can choose the level that is appropriate for their future endeavours.

There are five differing levels of learning in Stage 6:

• English Studies

• English Standard

• English Advanced

• English Extension 1

• English Extension 2

In all course students continue to develop their capacity to understand and use the English language for a variety of purposes and in various textual forms. They engage with and explore a variety of texts that include widely acknowledged quality literature of past and contemporary societies. Through their responding and composing of both critical and creative texts, students develop an understanding of themselves and of diverse human experiences and cultures. The study of English in Stage 6 provides students with opportunities to experiment with ideas and expression, to become innovative, active, independent learners, to collaborate and to reflect on their learning.

At Kincumber High School we are lucky enough to have experienced HSC Markers who can offer a discerning eye over creative and critical responses essential to all English courses. All our Faculty are dedicated to the learning of all students in the school and strive to help them attain their potential.
